Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific decisions from the official, following the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
