The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
