RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
